Facelift (Rhytidectomy)

As we grow older, our faces inevitably start to show unwanted signs of ageing such as loose, sallow skin, loss of volume and more prominent jowls. In order to reverse these signs of ageing, a surgical face/neck lift or a rhytidectomy can be performed to tighten the skin around your face, neck and jawline creating a more youthful appearance.

What is a facelift?

A facelift, also known as a rhytidectomy is a common facial cosmetic surgical procedure in the UK and is an effective solution if you have excess skin around your jawline and neck as well as sunken cheekbones. The procedure lifts the excess facial skin upwards, creating a tighter, more youthful appearance.

For many, this excess skin and lack of volume will be present from the natural ageing process, however extensive weight loss can also cause skin to lose its elasticity over time.

Although there are now a multitude of non-surgical treatments that can re-introduce volume into your face, if you’re troubled specifically by
excess skin then the optimum solution in most cases is to remove this loose skin through a surgical face lift procedure.

The rhytidectomy procedure

Due to advances in cosmetic surgical techniques there are now a number of different methods used to perform a rhytidectomy. These include:

  • Traditional full face lift – focuses on tightening your entire face and jowls
  • Full face lift and neck lift – combines the traditional full face lift with removing the excess skin around your neck
  • Mini or MACS facelift – targets excess skin specifically in your mid and lower face

Your surgeon will discuss with you during your consultation which technique will provide you with optimum results.

In general, a facelift procedure will take approximately 1-3 hours to perform and will require a general anaesthetic. Your Plastic Surgeon will create incisions around your ears but with placement that should minimise visible scarring. Depending on the type of procedure, your incisions may extend onto your scalp.

These incisions are designed to allow your Plastic Surgeon access to the fundamental framework of your face. From here your surgeon will lift and reshape your facial skin, before trimming and attaching it in its new tightened position.

Your facelift consultation

Your consultation is the perfect opportunity to meet with Mr Adrian Richards and his nursing team. Mr Richards will be on hand to answer any of your questions or areas of concern and will be able to fully advise you on your options, the procedure, aftercare, recovery period and expected results.

Top Tip!

Come to your consultation already prepared with a list of questions for your Plastic Surgeon. This ensures you won’t forget anything!

As with any facial cosmetic surgery, it is of paramount importance that you attend a consultation with your Plastic Surgeon to discuss whether this procedure is right for you and the right technique for your individual case.

Recovery period following facelift surgery

Your recovery period depends on the type of facelift surgery you undergo and your overall health. Most patients find that they can return to their normal daily life around 3-6 weeks post-surgery. Immediately following your surgery you will likely be bandaged and in some cases with plastic tubes still in place to drain any fluids.

You will most likely experience swelling and bruising but this is completely normal and will only take a few weeks to subside.

A comprehensive aftercare package will be provided to you by your Plastic Surgeon.
